CRITICAL SKILLS VISA in South Africa
The Critical Skills Visa is intended for foreign nationals whose qualifications and professional experience fall within the occupations, identified by the Department of Home Affairs, as being in short supply in South Africa. This visa category is designed to attract highly skilled professionals who can contribute to South Africa’s economic growth and development.

These identified occupations are contained in a Critical Skills List, which was last updated in October 2023.
In order to qualify for the Critical Skills Visa, you will need a valid offer of employment, in line with the occupation on the Critical Skills List, from a South African company.
the following steps must be taken:

If you received your qualifications abroad, they would need to be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in order to determine their South African equivalent. Specifically, SAQA will need to designate a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level to your qualification. Based on recent amendments, a Critical Skills Work Visa may be issued for a period of 12 months where the application is submitted with proof that the SAQA evaluation application has been submitted.

You will be required to register with the South African Professional Body applicable to your specific occupation. By providing you with membership, the Professional Body will assist with confirming your skills and qualifications to the Department of Home Affairs. Examples of Professional Bodies include:

Key Features of Critical Skills Visa

- Renewable from within South Africa
- Allows you to change to a different visa category from within South Africa
