Permanent Residence Means
Permanent residence allows qualifying foreign nationals to live and work in South Africa without having to renew temporary visas.
Applications are technical and evidence-driven. Status history, supporting documents, and compliance remain critical.
Permanent Residence Categories
If you have held a continuous work visa for five years, you may qualify for permanent residence. You will need a permanent offer of employment from a South African entity in order to apply.
If you have been married or in a permanent life partnership with a South African citizen or permanent resident for more than five years, you may apply for permanent residence. You will need to provide proof of a “good faith” relationship in the form of a marriage certificate or shared financial responsibility in the case of a life partnership.
This is a direct route to permanent residence for high-net-worth individuals. You will need to show a net worth of ZAR 12 million and, upon approval, undertake to pay ZAR 120, 000 to the Department of Home Affairs. This route does not have a corresponding temporary residence visa. If you would like to take up residence pending the finalization of this application, you may chose to apply for a temporary residence visa in the interim.
Holders of a critical skills visa may apply for permanent residence if they have more than five years of post-qualification experience. You will need to show that you are currently working in a field listed on the Critical Skills List and provide proof of registration with the relevant professional body.
If you are able to demonstrate a lifelong monthly income of at least ZAR 37,000 from a pension, annuity, or net worth, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence.
There are two main routes to permanent residence through family ties.
You may qualify for permanent residence if you are either:
1. child, under the age of 21, of a citizen or permanent resident; or
2. the relative (within the first degree of kinship) of a South African or permanent resident
If you have established or invested in a business in South Africa with an investment amount of ZAR 5 million or otherwise prescribed, you may apply for permanent residence. You will have to show that your business’ staff compliment is comprised of at least 60% South African citizens or permanent residents.
